For millions of people in Mexico and across the continent, the Virgin of Guadalupe is one such event, laden with meaning. Not because she \u201csolves\u201d conflicts in a \u201cmagical\u201d way, but because she proposes a different logic for how peoples relate to one another: the logic of dignity, encounter, and mercy.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saint Mary of Guadalupe appears \u2014 historically \u2014 on the most tense ground one could imagine: a clash of cultures, open wounds, humiliation, fear, and resentment. What is decisive is the event of grace, which moves toward conversion and carries a social message. In the Guadalupan account, Mary addresses a simple Indigenous man and speaks to him with a tenderness that is not sentimentality, but profound action that reaches the heart. She restores his name, his mission, and his confidence. She re-dignifies him. In an age of victors and vanquished, of the arrogant and the humiliated, this gesture carries a particular historical force: God chooses the path of what is small in order to mend what is broken.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this reason, Mary of Guadalupe becomes \u201cmother\u201d not in a sentimental sense, but in the most concrete sense: a mother is one who makes life possible and, when there is conflict, makes coexistence possible. Peace does not begin in lofty \u201cinternational relations,\u201d full of glamour and sometimes unconfessable interests; it begins when a society decides that the other is not an object to be discarded, a threat, or an instrument. Mary of Guadalupe, with her mestizo face and her closeness to the last of history, affirms an idea that urgently needs to be repeated today: no people is destined to be surplus, and no culture is authorized to crush another in order to feel secure.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a Guadalupan trait that often goes unnoticed: her capacity to deactivate sacrifice and violence. In times of polarization, conflicts are fueled by a psychological routine: we need scapegoats who concentrate all evil so as to justify our own excesses. Guadalupe, by contrast, pushes us toward an identity that does not need to hate in order to exist. Her message \u2014 deeply evangelical and liberating \u2014 does not deny justice; it purifies it. Justice without mercy becomes revenge; mercy without justice becomes naivety. True peace sustains both.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This point is crucial for today\u2019s international conversation. Peoples are tempted to believe that peace is simply \u201cwinning\u201d or imposing a balance of power. But balance without truth does not last long: sooner or later, it explodes. The Christian tradition insists on something uncomfortable for cynics and fanatics alike: peace is built with moral and legal limits, especially through the protection of the innocent, the pursuit of verifiable agreements, and the refusal to treat civilian populations as bargaining chips. Mary of Guadalupe is not a treatise on political science, but she is a school for everyone, including politicians: she teaches that the concrete person \u2014 the wounded, the displaced, the child, the prisoner, the migrant, the Indigenous person \u2014 is the place where the truth of any \u201creason of state\u201d is measured.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is also a Guadalupan contribution to public language: peace needs clean words. When discourse fills with political rhetoric, reality becomes manipulable. The Guadalupan narrative, by contrast, is expressed in a vocabulary of closeness: \u201cAm I not here, I who am your mother?\u201d In social terms, this is equivalent to a question that peoples should ask themselves often: \u201cWhom are we leaving alone?\u201d Violence grows where loneliness becomes institutionalized, where human life loses its face.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this reason, Mary of Guadalupe has had \u2014 and continues to have \u2014 a singular role as a religious and cultural bridge. In Mexico, her image has been a point of encounter even among people with opposing political views; in the diaspora, she accompanies migrations and communities that live between two worlds; across the continent, she is perceived as a bond of belonging that does not exclude by race, social class, or language. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Virgin of Guadalupe does not propose a \u201ccosmetic\u201d or merely \u201cevasive\u201d peace. She proposes an incarnate peace: looking suffering in the face, preventing its repetition, rebuilding trust. On the social level, this translates into very concrete tasks: education for reconciliation, transitional justice where needed, policies of welcome for victims, and a culture that does not celebrate the humiliation of the adversary. On the personal level, it means learning to argue without destroying, to demand without dehumanizing, to defend convictions without turning the other into a caricature.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, there is a dimension that can only be understood from faith, but which has public effects: Mary of Guadalupe reminds us that peace is born not only of strategies, but also of conversion. To convert is not to become \u201csoft\u201d or \u201clukewarm\u201d; it is to become, by God\u2019s grace, truthful. It is to renounce the useful lie, profitable hatred, and violence presented as \u201cinevitable.\u201d When a people becomes accustomed to such discourses, war becomes culture; when it rejects them, peace becomes possible.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In times of global uncertainty, the Virgin of Guadalupe continues to offer a simple \u2014 and therefore demanding \u2014 map for peace among peoples: dignity before domination; encounter before violence; mercy with justice before revenge; and the face of the vulnerable, the most humiliated, the most excluded, as the ultimate criterion. In a world that is fragmenting, this \u201cmaternal logic,\u201d this \u201cGuadalupan logic,\u201d is not weakness.
